NPA - Manuka honey possesses a natural property known as Non-Peroxide Activity (NPA), which is measured as a percentage of phenol equivalent. The regular “peroxide activity” of other types of honey renders them easy to destroy by exposure to heat and sunlight. The “non-peroxide activity” of Manuka honey from New Zealand and Australia makes the honey more potent and stable even when exposed to heat and sunlight.
MGO - MGO stands for Methylglyoxal, which is a naturally occurring molecule found in Manuka honey. It is measured in parts per million (ppm) and is used as an indicator of the strength of NPA or UMF activity in Manuka honey.
UMF - Unique Manuka Factor (UMF) is based on the amount of methylglyoxal and dihydroxyacetone present in the Manuka honey. It is a trademark and grading system that indicates the honey's purity and quality levels. When Dr. Peter Molan (MBE), a professor at the University of Waikato in New Zealand, first discovered the NPA effects of Manuka honey, a trademark for the UMF was registered. Only registered license holders can use the UMF quality trademark.
